I am very pleased to have found this site just before my holiday to
Caithness and Orkney!

I hope to visit some of the places where my ancestors lived such as
Canisbay, Olrig and Thurso.

My grandfather, Willie "Bildy" Smith was a tailor in Rotterdam St,
Thurso and a lot of my relatives are buried in the Mount Vernon
Cemetery.

Wonderful site! I am researching my grandfather's family. He was Donald
Sinclair b. around 1882 at Geisselittle, Thurso. His grandparents were
George and Barbara Sinclair.

My grandfather was a cattleman who went to work for the Farquhar family
on their farm in the parish of Reay.(Mrs.Farquhar was born a Henderson)

He married my granny, Jane Ann or Jessie Ann Farquhar in 1916.
They relocated to Manitoba, Canada in 1925.

I would be most interested in hearing from anyone who may have
connections with my Farquhar, Henderson or Sinclair lines.

Hello Andy from Alness.

Can you get in touch with me as we may be able to make a
connection through the Harrold's. Although ours came from Reiss
and not Keiss it might be worth a try.

Greetings
I am trying to trace the Manson family who lived in the Berriedale
area. The information I have so far from a marriage certificate and
1861 Census is -
William Manson married Agnes Ross at Berriedale on 3 June 1859. He was
born to William Manson and Ann (Gair) both deceased at time of
marriage. He was a farm grieve at Berriedale Inn and born at Bower,
Caitness 1820.
William was 31 years and Agnes 21 at the time of Census in 1861. They
had one child, a son called (yes you have guessed) William age 1 year.
William, Agnes and William along with his brother John, came to
Australia on the Castle Eden in 1864.
According to the Census there is a Robert Manson 24 married to Mary Ann
23 and family, listed as Innkeeper at the Berriedale Inn. Can anyone
tell me if they are related, please?
I am trying to find any information about this William and Agnes Manson
or his father and mother William and Ann m.s. Gair.
Agnes' parents were John Ross, Ground Officer at Berriedale Inn and

I have just arrived home in Yorksire after seven exciting days in the
Parish of Olrig. Looking for Coghill. Removing moss ect. to read the
inscriptions on graves, up to my knees in mud and soaked by a Scoittish
mist. It was wonderful, especially the company of Angela Lewis, who
made me feel so welcome to Caithness, The staff at the Family Research
rooms of both Wick and Thurso who were so helpful, and the welcome
cuppas` at Wick. I travelled the roads of Caithness, had to detour for
eight miles because of two horses occupying the middle of the road, and
would not move. A visit to the Thurso Gala, where I met the Vikings.
and a trip on the ferry to Orkney. There is lots more, I feel as if I
have been to heaven. But now there is the cases to unpack, and my notes
to write up before I forget everything. Thank you Caithness. I will
be back.
Regards Cathie

Andy Anderson   06/Aug/2002:20:47:57
I am based in Alness, Scotland and have been researching my Anderson
family for over ten years now on and off as time allows.

I now have some 400+ descendants of a Patrick Anderson born in
Canisbay in the late 1600s.I have also collected lots of other
Anderson info and will be happy to share that with other researchers.
I am also interested in Mackays and Harrolds from the Keiss area from
the 1850s onwards. I am looking for information as I have tended to
neglect that side of the family in my quest for Andersons.

The web site is a great idea for keeping in touch.

A good site for the members and others looking for their Caithness
ancestors.

1800's. Her name was Isobel Rugg Cormack. I don't know what her
mother's or father's names were. My grandmother immigrated to Canada

Enjoyed the pages as my Great Grandfather came from Thurso back in the
1850's and came to Port Phillip- later Melbourne and then came up to
Queensland. His name was Donald Meiklejohn- The family are all proud of
our Scottish heritage. Some of the names mentioned are also in our
Families-Sinclairs, Gunn.Sutherland, and Manson. To name just a few.

I have just been made aware of your page, thanks to A. Wicker. It's
great. As the Library Coordinator of our local Family History Society
appreciate how difficult it is. Our family research took us to Wick
some years ago and answered some questions but as researchers know
there is always more questions.
I am researching William Calder born in Grant St Pulteney Town
14/10/1876 m Johan Sutherland 31/1/1896 They lived at 12 Argyle Square
Pulteney Town with their 5 daughters. They migrated to Australia in
1911 He enlisted and served in WWI, on his enlistment papers he claimed
to have served for 17 years Voluntry Infantry in Scotland. Would
aprreciate any information or contact with other researchers or
information on Infantry Unints in Wick at that time (1900).

My gggranny, Jessie Simpson, married Timothy Elliott at Londonderry,
Nova Scotia in 1859. She was born May 27, 1839, in Pictou County, NS,
the daughter of William Simpson of Dunnigoe, Dunnet Head b. 1805 and
his wife Janet Sutherland, b. 1813 (in Scotland or NS). Whether
William went to Nova Scotia before or after his marriage isn't clear,
but it seems he was probably unmarried. Census list him as a yeoman and
mason. William was the son of Walter Simpson of Dunnet Head and his
wife Isobel (surname may also have been Simpson) b. May 13, 1770.
Their children included George, Anna, Margaret, Donald, William, James,
Isobel, John, and Peter. Any information about this Dunnet Head family
would be most gratefully received.

Wick. He would have visited Grimsby around 1938/1939. I believe his

I have very little information but any lead would be appreciated.

I was hoping to find descendents of Alexander Clark born Feb 1783 in
Wick, Andrew Clark born March-April 1794 in Wick and their brother
James Clark born Dec 1791. I am a 3times great granddaughter of Andrew
Clark. Their parents were Donald Clark and Margaret Malcolm both of
Wick. My father, now 86, is also Donald Clark. Can anyone help with
information on the families or on current relationships? We are both
very interested in why Andrew Clark seems to have left Wick in the
early 1800's. He married in Lesmahagow around 1820.
Any help greatly appreciated - I'm more than willing to share
information.

John Dunnet   23/Jun/2002:06:37:22
I am very impressed by the CFHS site and have been stimulated to begin
the quest to understand more about my Scottish roots. My great-
grandparents, John Dunnet (b. 1826, Canisbay) and Christina Manson
(Shearer)(b. 1832, Huna) sailed to Australia in the 'Prince of the Sea'
out of Thurso in 1853 perhaps not long after they were married by Rev.
R. McGregor in Canisbay. I very much would like to learn more about the
Dunnets. I can recall long-departed relatives talking warmly about
links with the Shearers, Geddes and Mansons. I think quite a few people
bearing these names must have set sail for a new life in Australia
around the same time. I think many of them settled at Maclean on the
North Coast of NSW. What prompted them all to leave home? Economic
circumstances?
My great-grandfather was claimed by the Australia sun at a young age
but not before fathering seven children (five girls, two boys).

Douglas Taylor   18/Jun/2002:16:59:47

I am a Bain on my mother side.
My mum's Paternal Grand Mother was Elizabeth Bain, daughter of Kenneth
Bain (fisherman) and Christina Bain (nee Mackay) married on 9th Dec
1859. Elizabeth was born 7th January 1868 at Latheronwheel. She was
married to George Simpson Sharp, a journey man farrier.

They moved south and lived at various locations in Glasgow. Times were
hard and my Mum's father remembers regular food parcels of fish and
other produce coming down from the Bains who lived up in Caithness. In
particular two Bain brothers who I assume must have been Elizabeths
elder male siblings.

My Mum has a strong suspicion that their croft is actually Laidhay
croft .

Unfortunately we have not got any further back than the marriage of
Kenneth Bain and Christina Mackay in 1859 and I was wondering ifanyone
could perhaps shed any more light on the matter.
Many thanks for taking the time to read this.

Carlton Brown   17/Jun/2002:03:50:10
My great grandmother, Jessie St. Clair Anderson (1871 - 1955) told me
her mother, Elizabeth Mackay was from the town of Wick in Scotland.
Jessie was born in Chicago, ILL, in 1871 and her birth records and any
marriage records for Elizabeth that may have existed there were
destroyed in the great Chicago fire of 1871. I have much work to do
track down amd record Elizabeth's history, but I am nevertheless trying.
This Caithness site is a marvelous discovery for me and I hope it leads
to helpful information. Jessie and Elizabeth are from my father's side,
while my mother's maiden name was Buchanan. I live in California, but
my roots are definitely in Scotland.

Hi from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada....I am researching the CHARLESON
name...I have traced my line back to William Charleson (abt. 1730)who
married Elsbet Doull in Bower. I am descended through their son, James

Hi guys,
I am currently researching my mothers family tree, and have traced her
great grandfather to Canisbay, Caithness. His name was Dr David
Kennedy. He married a Letitia Stewart in 1845 in Sydney, New South
Wales. Do you know of anyone in your area that would be tracing this
line at all. I would love to make contact and share information.

Thanks for the great site and opportunity to make contact.

Looking for descendants of Alexander Ross and Jean Swanson (m. 1812
Midlotian, Scotland, later in Caithness county - children: Isabel,
Alexander, George, Walter Steel), or John Thomson and Christian MacKay
(m. Dec 1820, Caithness County - children: Angus, Mary, Christian,
Johanna, Catharine, Margaret, William, Eliza).

I'm descendent through George Ross and Christian Thomson (m Sep 1850).
Alexander Ross, brother of George married Catharine Thomson (June
1850), sister of Christian. George and Christian went to Canada after
the birth of their first child - Isabella (b. 1854).

Thank you for having this site - hopefully some of the family is still
in the area.

I am reserching the history of william Swanson (my GGG grandfather) who
married Margaret Swanson ( I think his cousin) about 1797 they had six
children. John, Jane,Janet,William, Lily,Donald and Margaret. The
births were registered at Thurdistoft, Hayfield, Murkle,Babster and
Burnside of Murkle. Does any one know if these are the names of

Neil McLean   17/May/2002:06:07:00
I have just obtained my fathers world war 1 service records and found
out that he had previously been married on 13/01/1919 in Caithness to
Mary Jane Dickson and lived at 1 Cowgate or Comgate Street Caithness.
My fathers name was Kenneth McLean and his parents Donald and Mary
lived on their farm at White Bridge, Scarfskerry Thurso. Until today I
had no idea of my fathers background, I would like to know where is
White Bridge, do any McLean's own a farm in the area, do any McLean's
or Dickson's still live at 1 Cowgate/Comgate Street, Caithness. Also
my father who completed a motor mechanic apprenticeship at Argyle Motor
Works Glasgow was born at Dingwell Ross Shire in 1900 and died in 1963
in Australia.

Susan Dickson   14/May/2002:18:15:21
Hello!
I enjoyed looking through your site. I spent some time In
Caithness earlier on this year, and managed to do a bit of
research in Wick library. Almost all of my ancestors came from
Caithness, most of them ending up in Leith by the 1900s.
I am trying to find any information on my gg grandfather James
Dickson, born in Latheron around 1852. His father was James
Dickson and his mother was Jane Sutherland. I suspect they were
not married, hence the birth was never registered. Jane
Sutherland later married Samuel Cromarty (Latheron 1854) . Does
anyone know if James Dickson was brought up as a step son to
Samuel Cromarty? There are later Dickson / Cromarty
connections which make me think this was probably the case.
Hope someone out there can help!

Hi, I am trying to trace my grandfather James Nicol from John
o'Groats/Caithness. He born illigitimate and spent most of his live
covering up his real age and place of birth. The most I ever got out of
my father was that is was a Breach of Promise and the family spent
years fighting it in the courts. Does anybody know how I can search
legal papers or Newspapers from 1880 to 1900. Thanks Heather

Dear Dinah

"So we come from the same tattie but a different shaw!" This family
tree research is fascinating putting all the pieces together - my
granma Janet Georgeson came to work in the Scottish Borders and married
a policeman who was born in Norham, he was a fisherman before he became
a policeman. I'm from Peebles. What Regiment was William in?
Thanks a million for the information
regards Mona

Wonderful sight you have, and so much information that I am overwhelmed!
I have just learned that my Alexander Malcolm 9b. circa 1780) family of
Longside, Aberdeenshire, originated in Wick, Caithness. Your websight
has given a lot of information about the area.
Thank you! Mimi Malcolm

DearDinah,
I have kept a note of the information you posted - it may help. I need
now to search the census returns and am kicking myself I was not ready
to do this when I was at Wick last year at the SWRI conference. William
Georgeson an agricultural labourer married to a Janet Henderson on 20th
Dec 1839 were the parents of my great grandmother Christina Georgeson
(married name Johnstone). Thank you for answering

Have just found your site and am hoping for help tracing the parents of
Alexander Sutherland, Gamekeeper at Ackergill who married Jane McCarthy
at Ackergill on 26th November 1841. I have found birth registrations
for 2 sons Alexander (my great grandfather)on 7th March 1849 and George
born 20th December 1851 - registered at Wick, Caithness. However,
Jane's surname is now spelt MacCurthy.

Would appreciate any help to progress.

Hello!
I am a descendant of a James Young who moved to Dunbeath Mains from
Sanquhar district with his second wife, Janet Young, and their family,
and had more children in Dunbeath - between 1860 and 1890 approx. He
moved to Ayr before 1891 Census.
I do not have all marriages of the family, but kow that daughter
Margaret married William (Gunn?) Sullivan, Hannah married John
McWhirter, Janet married Alexander Sinclair, David migrated to
Queensland, Australia and married in Maryborough, Adam Thorburn Young
went to England and marrie there(?).
I am a descendant of James Young's first marriage. But I'd love to
here from any descendants of James and Janet Young.
Peter Jones, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
